After the disappointment of a 13% rating only for Friday’s semi-final game in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague final four between Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv and CSKA Moscow, Channel 10 can smile this morning. Last night’s final in which Maccabi took the European champions title by beating Real Madrid brought the channel to a two-year viewing peak: an average through the game of 978 thousand viewers and 32% of Jewish households. At the peak, the viewing figure reached 43.6% of households. According to estimates by industry sources, Channel 10 netted NIS 4 million from last night’s broadcast

.In fact, the viewing figures are even higher, as many people saw the game on the Sports Channel HD broadcast, which is not taken into account in the ratings. Nor do the ratings include group viewing in bars and other public places, which is very common for sports events like this one.

In 2011, when Maccabi Tel Aviv lost the Euroleague final to Panathinaikos, Channel 10 recorded an average rating of 27.2%. The record belongs to the Euroleague final ten years ago in which Maccabi played Bologna in Tel Aviv, when the ratings reached 46.1% of Jewish households.

Despite Channel 10’s high figures yesterday and the revenue it garnered, its cash flow problems are expected to worsen. The channel’s main disappointment is from its expensive reality show “To the End of the World”, which is not meeting the viewing target set for it. For the show to pay back the investment in it and provide successful viewing evenings it has to attract more than 15% of Jewish households. Since it started to be screened, however, the figures have been in decline, and last Tuesday’s broadcast reached a 12.2% rating only.

This means that Channel 10’s cash flow, which was expected to suffice until the end of the year without a new investor being brought in, will fall short earlier, possibly by October, unless the schedule statistics recover dramatically. This makes it more pressing for the channel to find an investor in order to obtain a license at the end of the year and continue in existence. As reported in “Globes”, so far Channel 10 has not paid its franchise fees on the due dates, and its payments have been rescheduled by the Second Broadcasting Authority.
