It has been 40 years since designer Diane Von Fürstenberg first introduced her iconic jersey wrap-dress and rose to fashion stardom. Four decades later, the former princess and now president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America is set to star in yet another fashionable field.
The celebrated Fashionista, who made numerous appearances as a judge on Bravo’s “Project Runway”, is teaming up with E! entertainment channel for her very own Reality show, E! announced last week. The series, currently titled The DVF Project, will document Von Fürstenberg’s search to find a new Global Brand Ambassador.
“In The DVF Project, young hopefuls vie for a chance to be a part of the iconic designer’s empire, giving us all an inside peek into the fast-paced fashion industry and what it takes to succeed”, E!’s announcement stated.
The contestants will jet-set around the globe to DVF sponsored events, meet celebrities, work on multi-million dollar campaigns, and produce charity events, all in the name of DVF, and in the hope of becoming the new brand ambassador.
“I am so thrilled to partner with E! and to grant young women the opportunity to become the women they want to be!”, said Von Fürstenberg of her new show.
“Diane Von Fürstenberg is one of fashion’s most innovative designers and a true icon who inspires women to seize opportunities, ” said E!’s executive vice president of programming and development, Jeff Olde, adding that “there is a magical, somewhat ‘Willy Wonka’ aspect to the world Diane wants to create with this show. That is if Willy Wonka were a fabulous, glamorous fashion icon willing to share her secrets with talented young women dedicated to learning them.”
There is currently no air date, but the show is expected to premiere in late 2014.
Diane Von Fürstenberg (née Halfin) was born in Brussels, Belgium to Jewish parents. She initially rose to prominence in 1969, when she married Prince Egon of Fürstenberg , thus becoming Princess Diane of Fürstenberg. Wanting to make a name for herself for something other than being a Prince’s wife, Von Fürstenberg began designing women’s clothes. In 1974, she created the wrap dress, which came to symbolize power and independence for an entire generation of women.
By 1976, she had sold over a million of the dresses, launched a cosmetic line, and was featured on the cover of Newsweek. The accompanying article declared her “the most marketable woman since Coco Chanel.”
In 1997, after a hiatus from fashion , Von Fürstenberg re-launched her company and re-introduced the wrap dress, which gained traction with an entirely new generation of women.
In 2005 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) for her impact on fashion, and one year later was elected the CFDA’s president, an office she continues to hold. In this role, she has dedicated herself to fostering emerging talent and helping to establish the Design Piracy Prohibition Act, which protects designers from counterfeit reproductions of their work.
