After months of rumors and speculations, the cast of the upcoming 7th Star Wars installment has finally been announced. Following Monday’s first cast read-through at London-based Pinewood Studios, director & co-writer J. J. Abrams posted an announcement on Star Wars’ official site – along with a photo – revealing the cast.

In addition to newcomers Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Adam Driver (Girls), John Boyega (Attack the Block) and veteran actor Max von Sydow, among others – the new film will see the much-anticipated return of original franchise stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.

“We are so excited to finally share the cast of ‘Star Wars: Episode VII, ‘” said Abrams. “It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

According to Deadline.com, Harrison Ford has a “gigantic role” in the film.

Ford will reprise the role of Han Solo, the loner spaceship captain who throughout the course of the first trilogy becomes a chief figure in the rebel alliance against the evil galactic empire.

In a red-carpet interview in Chicago last month, the 71 year-old actor said regarding the then-rumors of his involvement with the new film, that while it was “not in the bag yet”, he was “looking forward” to reprising the role that helped make him a huge star.

In addition to his role in the upcoming installment, Entertainment Weekly reports that the star might also appear in a planned spin-off film about the older Han Solo’s youthful adventures. It is not yet confirmed by Disney, though.

Harrison Ford was born on July 13, 1942 to a Jewish mother and an Irish Catholic father.

His career has spanned over six decades and includes roles in many Hollywood blockbusters, including Apocalypse Now, Patriot Games, the Indiana Jones film series and the original Star Wars trilogy.

It is estimated that Ford’s films have grossed over $3.5 billion, with worldwide grosses surpassing $6 billion, making him the fourth highest-grossing US domestic box-office star.

In 1997 he was ranked no. 1 in Empire’s “Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time”.

Jewish producer, screenwriter, director, actor and composer J. J. Abrams made a name for himself as the creator of television hit shows Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe. His directorial film work includes 2006’s Mission: Impossible III, 2009’s Star Trek, and its 2013 sequel “Star Trek Into Darkness”.

In 2013, Abrams was chosen to co-write, co-produce and direct Star Wars VII – the first Star Wars film to be produced since The Walt Disney Company acquired ownership of Star Wars creator George Lucas’ film company, Lucasfilm.
