Helena Bonham Carter a strong candidate to win a BAFTA

Ms. Bonham Carter  is on the shortlist to win her first television BAFTA award this year for portraying Elizabeth Taylor in a BBC Four made for television movie on her tempestuous relationship with Richard Burton.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

British-born actress Helena Bonham Carter is reportedly on the shortlist of four to pick up her second leading female actress BAFTA in this year’s awards.

The UK equivalent of the Emmys and Oscars combined, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)  awards  were established in 1947 to support and develop  the film and  television industry in the UK.

If all goes according to plan Ms. Bonham Carter, will be picking up her first  television BAFTA  award, alongside her co-star Dominic West for their portrayals of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the made-for-TV movie produced by BBC Four. The award ceremony will be held this year at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in the West End of London on Sunday, May 18th.

Helena did  famously win a  BAFTA in 2011 for her part of Queen Elizabeth the First in the Oscar-winning movie  the “King’s Speech”.

Helena Bonham Carter, who was last nominated for the  UK TV Bafta in 2009  is a also  two-time Academy Award nominee for her performances in The Wings of the Dove and The King’s Speech, as well as having been nominated  for a golden globe award no less than seven times. As well as her BAFTA award,  Ms. Bonham Carter has picked up an International Emmy Award for best actress, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award.

In recognition of her services to drama Ms. Bonham Carter was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2012  Queen’s New Year honors list, with her medal being presented to her by her Majesty the Queen at a special ceremony  held in London’s Buckingham Palace .

Earlier this year British Prime Minister David Cameron announced the appointment of Ms. Bonham Carter as a member of Britain’s recently reinstated National Holocaust Commission.

Helena Bonham Carter CBE was born in the predominantly Jewish neighborhood of Golders Green, London, with her mother, Elena, who came from a Jewish background  a prominent psychotherapist, while her father, Raymond Bonham Carter, came from one of  Britain’s most well known political families, with her great-grandfather, H. H. Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford serving as  Prime Minister of  Great Britain during the years  1908 to 1916.

On her mother’s side of the family, Helena’s  grandfather, a well known  Spanish diplomat Eduardo Propper de Callejón was responsible for saving the lives of  thousands of Jews during World War Two, later being  recognized as a  Righteous Among the Nations. Her  maternal grandmother, Hélène emanated from an upper class French Jewish family, while   her sister Liliane, Helena’s great aunt,   becoming a member of the prominent Rothschild family through marriage.
