Israel has established a unique, long lasting relationship with many Latin American countries, based on economic, cultural and defense interests. For many years, defence systems developed for Israel’s Defense Forces are also helping to secure the defence needs of its’ friends and allies in Latin America in ways that they can budgetarily afford.
In recent years, customers have also entrusted Israel’s leading defence industries with providing solutions tailored specifically to address their own unique requirements. Some of Israel’s leading defence companies are currently presenting their latest systems at the Israel national pavilion at FIDAE 2014, the Latin American defense industry exhibition and air show.
One of the systems on display there is a joint cooperation between the Israeli state owned Israel Military Industries, or IMI, and its Chilean counterpart Famae Company. The two companies are presenting a mobile rocket launcher vehicle that allows for the carrying and firing of a mix of very precise rockets.
The rocket launcher vehicle itself is made by Famae, and is exceptionally versatile for use on all kinds of difficult terrains, while the precision rockets are manufactured by Israel Military Industries. The launcher carries both IMI’s Accular and EXTRA rockets; the Accular has a range of 40 km and the EXTRA of 150 km.
According to Shai Haimovitz a representative from IMI, with this system Chile has now adopted the Israeli doctrine of using multiple rocket launcher that are highly versatile. With the Famae vehicle and launchers, it is possible to carry a mix of both four EXTRA rockets, and ten of the smaller, shorter range Accular rockets.
Rami Sokolower, Director of Marketing of IMI’s Land Systems Division, which includes the LYNX system on which the joint cooperation with Famae is based, says that there is also wider ongoing cooperation with the Chilean company. This also includes marketing an active defense system for armored vehicles, known as the “Iron Fist” which both companies are jointly presenting as well.
The FIDAE exhibition is one of the major defence exhibitions in South America. This year 13 Israeli companies are presenting at the exhibition, with the assistance of SIBAT, which is the umbrella foreign defence assistance and export organization of the Israeli Ministry of Defence.
