Halley Feiffer To Go Off-Broadway In Jon Robin Baitz’s ‘The Substance of Fire’

Halley Feiffer, who has been making herself a name in Hollywood,  co-producing as well as co-writing with the 2013 film “He’s Way More Famous Than You” is taking a break  to go back to her  off-Broadway roots, taking  the lead role in the  “The Substance of Fire”.

The Substance of Fire, to be directed by Trip Cullman, will open on April 27th  at  the Second Stage Theatre, situated on 305 West 43rd Street in Manhattan.

Ms. Feiffer, whose last Broadway appearance was in 2011 when she appeared in  the classic “House of Blue Leaves ” at the Walter Kerr Theatre alongside  Ben Stiller, Edie Falco and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Halley was a recipient of a Theatre World Award for her performance in the House of Blue Leaves.

In the “Substance of Fire” , Halley will be joined by  Daniel Eric Gold , Charlayne Woodard, Carter Hudson and  John Noble in the period drama which follows a power struggle which threatens to pull up family apart from the inside.

This year’s production will be the first time that The Substance of Fire has been staged in New York since it originally appeared off-Broadway in the early 1990s, when it   starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Ron Rifkin. After its successful Broadway run the play was to the Mitzi Newhouse Theatre within the   Lincoln Center for performing arts on Broadway. In 1996, Jon Robin Baitz’s  story was made into a movie, with Sarah Jessica Parker and Ron Rifkin again  taking the leading roles alongside Tony Goldwyn.

Halley Feiffer, the daughter of well-known satirist and cartoonist Jules Feiffer and Jenny Allen, herself  a talented actress, comedienne and writer, began her career in entertainment as soon as she graduated from Wesleyan University in 2007.

First and foremost  Halley Feiffer is regarded as a talented playwright, with her plays having appeared  not only on and off-Broadway but also at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Halley was the winner of the National Young Playwrights’ Contest in 2002

Apart from the House of Blue Leaves Halley has also appeared off-Broadway in Election Day, Medieval Play, you you None of the Above,  subUrbia, Still Life, Some Americans Abroad and Tigers Be Still, .

At the same time Halley has built itself up a promising film career as an actress, appearing in a number of films and television series, with horror most prominent television role to date  being  in third and final season of  the HBO series “Bored to Death”  produced by Jonathan Ames, where she starred as Emily, a recovering alcoholic.
