Jeff Robinov, not so long ago one of the most influential people in the movie industry as president of Warner Brothers has received some serious backing from Huayi Brothers Media of China for a new movie production business which will trade under the title of Studio Eight.
According to a recent statement issued by Huayi Brothers Media to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, the company has signed what is described as a” term sheet”, in which they will be injecting between $120 million to $150 million in the studio is as well as becoming distributors for the studio in Greater China.
The fortunes of the Huayi Brothers have come on in leaps and bounds since the liberalization of China’s film industry began more than 10 years ago, with the company distributing a diverse range of film and TV production and distribution, as well as operating a considerable chain of multiplex cinemas as well as theme parks.
The agreement also among the major breakthrough for Robinov, who has been investigating his options since leaving Warner Brothers studios in the middle of last year. Among the balls he has had in the air as a possible tie-up with Russia-born billionaire Len Blavatnik, who already have considerable interests in the entertainment industry with a company which he owns having acquired the Warner Music Group for $3.3 billion in 2011. Another possibility being mooted was a tie-up with producer Graham King, whose best-known movies are The Town, The Departed and the Oscar-winning Argo.
Jeff Robinov began his career in the movie business as an agent for Writers & Artists, leading them to join International Creative Management also as an agent, working with some of Hollywood’s leading directors with the jewel in his crown being Chris McQuarrie who won an Academy Award award for The Usual Suspects.
Robinov gave up his career as an agent to join Warner Bros. Pictures in 1997 with his first job at the studio being Senior Vice President of Production, where he remained for five years until becoming President in charge of Production in 2002. During his time in that role Warner Brothers grossed one billion-dollar annually both in the domestic market as well as overseas. Thanks to these remarkable results Jeff Robinov was promoted to president of the Warner Bros Pictures Group at Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. remaining in the post from November 2007 till when he was surprisingly dismissed in July 2013.
