Starbucks Crisis: Coffee Giant Cuts 1,100 Jobs Amid Financial Troubles

And this is not all. Starbucks is also dropping 13 drinks from the menu.

Starbucks

Love it or hate it, Starbucks completely transformed the coffee industry around the world after it exploded onto the scene thirty years ago. It was such a success that at one point it seemed that a new Starbucks was opening on just about every street corner in every major city. Unfortunately, the party might be over for the coffee giant.

Starbucks is laying off 1,100 corporate employees as part of an ongoing restructuring effort, CEO Laxman Narasimhan announced in a letter to employees on Monday. The cuts, which follow the company’s earlier indication in January of planned reductions, will impact nearly 7% of its 16,000 corporate workers. Baristas and other employees in company-owned stores will not be affected. The move comes as Starbucks faces sluggish sales and seeks to streamline operations.

And this is not all. Starbucks is also dropping 13 drinks from the menu.

“We are simplifying our structure, removing layers and duplication and creating smaller, more nimble teams,” said Brian Niccol, Starbucks chairman. “Our intent is to operate more efficiently, increase accountability, reduce complexity and drive better integration. All with the goal of being more focused and able to drive greater impact on our priorities.”

“We believe it’s a necessary change to position Starbucks for future success,” he added.

As for the drinks set to be jettisoned from the Starbucks menu, apparently, most people will not miss them.

“As part of our plan to get back to Starbucks, we’re simplifying our menu to focus on fewer, more popular items, executed with excellence,” Starbucks told TODAY.com. “This will make way for innovation, help reduce wait times, improve quality and consistency, and align with our core identity as a coffee company.”

So, what is being dumped?

The drinks on the chopping block include Iced Matcha Lemonade, Espresso Frappuccino, Caffè Vanilla Frappuccino, White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino, Java Chip Frappuccino, Chai Crème Frappuccino, Caramel Ribbon Crunch Crème Frappuccino, Double Chocolaty Chip Crème Frappuccino, Chocolate Cookie Crumble Crème Frappuccino and White Chocolate Crème Frappuccino and a few more.

New drinks are planned to take their place on the Starbucks menu.
