Sam Altman’s OpenAI is getting ready to roll out its new “Strawberry” AI service in the fall. However, the company first provided a demonstration of Strawberry’s capabilities to American national security officials, reported The Information.
Strawberry is expected to possess advanced capabilities, including the ability to solve novel math problems, develop sophisticated market strategies, and conduct in-depth research.
In July, Reuters revealed that OpenAI was developing the new AI model, codenamed “Strawberry.” The report was based on internal documents obtained by Reuters. The documents outlined a plan for how the company intends to use Strawberry for research purposes. The source who shared the documents described the plan as a work in progress.

At the time, an OpenAI spokesman said, “We want our AI models to see and understand the world more like we do. Continuous research into new AI capabilities is a common practice in the industry, with a shared belief that these systems will improve in reasoning over time.”
Strawberry is designed to handle complex tasks, including developing marketing strategies and solving intricate word puzzles. It may be integrated into existing AI models, such as ChatGPT-4o.
According to The Information, Strawberry is the basis for a cutting-edge language model OpenAI is developing called “’Orion,” which is intended to surpass the capabilities of GPT-4. Strawberry will play a crucial role in generating training data for Orion. By leveraging high-quality synthetic data, Orion may be able to reduce errors compared to its predecessors. Research consistently demonstrates the importance of high-quality data for developing effective AI models.
OpenAI boasts that GPT-4o is designed for enhanced human-computer interaction, can process and generate a variety of media formats, including text, audio, and images. It responds quickly to audio inputs, often within a fraction of a second, matching human response times. While maintaining the performance of GPT-4 Turbo for text and code, GPT-4o excels in handling non-English languages and offers significant improvements in speed and cost-effectiveness.
“GPT-4o mini surpasses GPT-3.5 Turbo and other small models on academic benchmarks across both textual intelligence and multimodal reasoning and supports the same range of languages as GPT-4o,” said OpenAI when announcing its launch. “It also demonstrates strong performance in function calling, which can enable developers to build applications that fetch data or take actions with external systems and improved long-context performance compared to GPT-3.5 Turbo.”
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence (AI) research and implementation organization based in the United States. It was founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman and several others. OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all humanity.
Sam Altman has been named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine and one of the “Best Young Entrepreneurs in Technology” by Businessweek. He is also the founder of the Long Term Future Fund, a venture capital fund that invests in companies working to solve long-term problems like climate change and pandemics.
