A recent study by the Israel Innovation Authority shows that Israel is a major player in the development of Generative AI technology. With 4% of global GenAI companies headquartered in Israel, the country ranks third behind only the USA and UK.

Dror Bin, CEO of the Israel Innovation Authority, highlighted the impressive growth of Israeli GenAI companies, attributing it to the nation’s strong foundation in technological expertise, research, and understanding of market needs.

The study identified 73 Israeli companies actively involved in GenAI development. These companies are at the forefront of advancements in natural language processing, computer vision, and cognitive automation.

While acknowledging Israel’s strong position, Dror Bin emphasized the need to address intensifying global competition. Continued investment in research infrastructure, talent development, and international collaboration will be crucial for maintaining Israel’s leadership in AI.

The Israel Innovation Authority is committed to supporting this growth through expanded programs for AI companies, fostering collaboration between academia and industry, and attracting foreign investment. Their goal is to solidify Israel’s position as a global AI powerhouse.

The study categorized GenAI companies into three groups:

Foundation Model Developers: This group focuses on creating the core building blocks of GenAI technology. Israel has one company in this category, ranking third globally.
Large Model Developers: Companies in this group develop specialized, complex models for specific applications. With 73 companies, Israel ranks third globally in this category.
API Model Users: Companies that utilize pre-built models offered by others were not analyzed in this study.

The Israel Innovation Authority is taking concrete steps to ensure continued leadership in AI. A national program with a budget of 1 billion NIS aims to invest 600 million NIS by the end of 2024. Additionally, a call for proposals will be issued in July for the establishment of a supercomputer specifically designed for training large AI models, further bolstering Israel’s capabilities in this field.
