China is experiencing the world’s fastest increase in monkeypox cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The country needs to act fast to contain the spread of the disease, which has been spreading rapidly in Asia.
The WHO has declared the monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency. Japan, South Korea, and Thailand have all reported weekly new case numbers in the double digits in 2023, meaning the virus has been spreading in the domestic population. However, China surpassed all other countries with 315 confirmed cases in the past three months.
Mpox is less contagious than COVID-19 but can still be a severe illness. The symptoms of monkeypox include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. There is no specific treatment for monkeypox, but most people recover within a few weeks.

More than 88,000 people have contracted the disease since 2022, and more than 150 people have died. Some countries have been more successful than others at containing domestic monkeypox outbreaks, and much of their success is arguably a result of proactive measures like vaccination campaigns.
The WHO is urging China to take urgent action to contain the monkeypox outbreak. The country needs to increase testing and contact tracing, and it needs to make sure that people who are at risk of infection have access to vaccination. If China does not act quickly, the monkeypox outbreak could spiral out of control.
