Can Coffee Help You Lose Weight?

Coffee

Coffee is a multi-billion dollar industry. There are coffee bars everywhere and supermarkets are filled with numerous varieties of the drink. We love coffee. And, let’s face it, coffee is as central to many people’s lives as breathing. But can it help people lose weight?

Well, there is a new study that was published in the journal BMJ Medicine by scientists who believe it could do exactly that. The researchers also said that coffee could help limit the development of Type 2 diabetes.

And think about that for a moment. While you drink your morning cup of coffee, or when you get that triple shot of espresso in the afternoon just to keep you going, you might actually be making yourself healthier.

Type 2 diabetes is one that people are not born with, but which develops later in life, usually due to obesity. The Mayo Clinic explains it is a condition that happens because of a problem in the way the body regulates and uses sugar as a fuel. That sugar also is called glucose. This long-term condition results in too much sugar circulating in the blood. Eventually, high blood sugar levels can lead to disorders of the circulatory, nervous and immune systems.

So, if coffee can help with obesity, it should probably not be had with sugar, or artificial sweeteners for that matter. Which means you should stay away from all of those flavored cappuccino drinks, especially the ones with sweet whip cream.

The way this works is related to the caffeine in coffee, and how long the caffeine remains in the body’s system.

The scientists concluded higher plasma caffeine concentrations might reduce adiposity – morbid obesity – and risk of type 2 diabetes. They said further clinical study is warranted to investigate the translational potential of these findings towards reducing the burden of metabolic disease.

Dr. Dipender Gill, senior author of the study from Imperial College London, said, “These results suggest caffeine may be linked to a lower body mass index, lower body fat and a reduced likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes. It may improve people’s metabolism, although this doesn’t mean people should go out and drink lots of high-calorie caffeinated drinks like chai lattes.”
