Balena, an Israeli green/eco-friendly startup, has come up with an amazing new way to limit garbage and enhance the environment at the same time: a bio-degradable shoe that can be put into the ground to enrich the soil or used for a home garden. Yes, you heard that right!
Now imagine that for a second! One of the biggest environmental problems the world faces is tied to waste management. All that garbage needs to be collected, and processes, and sent to landfills. This is all at the expense of taxpayers and the use of carbon-emitting energies. And the landfills themselves are not environmentally friendly.
But now everyday items, from shoes to shirts and even possibly disposable goods someday, can be made from eco-friendly materials that not only will not sit in landfills for eternity but can also be used again for planting and gardening.

Balena is a Tel Aviv based material science company founded by David Roubach in 2020. Balena Science develops compostable and biodegradable thermoplastic materials. Their mission is to create a circular model for consumer goods products and solve one of the fashion industry’s biggest challenges: the products’ end of life. According to their website Balena’s top priority is to continue disrupting the materials industry by innovating and developing cutting edge circular materials to replace hazardous, polluting, non-compostable, and synthetic materials currently in use across different industries.
Balena’s flagship material is called BioCir, a durable and flexible bio-material that is said to be the world’s first fully compostable thermoplastic. This way Balena is paving the way to reduce toxic and fossil fuel-based materials commonly used by the fashion industry. BioCir can be used as granulate for mass production in injection molding, for extrusion, as well as filament for 3D printing.
“The global fashion industry is one of the world’s biggest polluters. At Balena, our goal is to help turn this around,” said David Roubach, Founder and CEO of Balena. “We’re doing this by creating our own viable biodegradable plastic alternatives and fully circular systems that can be easily scaled, and copied and pasted across the globe. We hope our BioCir footwear shows the world that there is a real alternative: Fashion can be fabulous, functional and Earth-friendly. We’re proud to be the company opening the door for any fashion brand to start stepping into a more circular future.”
