For the 8th straight week, masses of Israelis will take to the streets on a Saturday night to protest Benjamin Netanyahu’s government’s judicial reforms currently before the Knesset. The reform plan passed the first stages of becoming law last week.
The reforms would end judicial review in Israel by effectively stripping the Supreme Court of its power to override laws passed by the Knesset or actions made by the government that violate certain basic democratic principles.
The opposition charges this would end Israel’s nature as a democratic state and has been calling for such protests.

The women photographed took part in a demonstration in central Tel Aviv wearing costumes from the television show “The Handmaid’s Tale.” They did so because they believe the proposed reforms would make it possible for the ultra-orthodox parties in the Knesset who are part of Netanyahu’s coalition government to pass new laws that would enforce religious standards in public places including more conservative dress.
