Neil Gaiman’s “Ocean At The End Of The Lane” Wins The Specsavers National Book Award For 2013

Neil Gaiman, one of the UK’s best loved authors, has been voted outright winner of the Specsavers National Book Award for his novel “Ocean at the End of the Lane”.

Gaiman’s novel, described as a modern-day fairy tale about a man returning to his childhood home for a funeral, won a public vote from a shortlist of the winners of all 10 categories from the year’s published list, with other shortlisted titles including Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and David Walliams’ Demon Dentist.

Gaiman, who grew up in East Grinstead in Susses, but now lives in the United States, first came into the public spotlight in the late nineteen eighties  when he began to release his Sandman series of  graphic fantasy comic books, which ran for seven years and saw a total of 75 being published by the Vertigo, an offshoot of DC Comics the American comic-book publisher.

A prolific writer  of  all manner of written works covering  the broadest spectrum, including film scripts,  prose and  poetry, journalism and song lyrics, Neil Gaiman is listed in the Dictionary of Literary Biography as one of the top ten living post-modern writers.

Gaiman’s “Ocean at the End of the Lane” is a complete antithesis of last year’s winner,  EL James’s “Fifty Shades of Gray”.

 

Neil Richard Gaiman an English author of short fiction, novels, comic books, graphic novels, audio theatre and films. His notable works include the comic book series The Sandman and novels Stardust, American Gods, Coraline, and The Graveyard Book.

Gaiman  has been the recipient of a large number of literary awards, including the Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker awards, as well as the Newbery and Carnegie medals, as well as being  the first author to win both the Newbery and the Carnegie medals for his novel, The Graveyard Book.
