Palo Alto Networks Buys Israel’s Cider Security for $300 million

Cider Security, an Israeli cyber security startup that offers the AppSec Operating System, is getting bought out by Palo Alto Networks, an American cyber security firm, for $300 million in cash and stock – $195 million in cash. Cider Security only just came out of stealth in March of this year when the company raised $38 million in a Series A round of funding.

The deal comes not long after it was revealed that a possible buyout of apiiro, an Israeli startup that boasts that it is the industry’s first Code Risk Platform in the area of DevSecOps, by Palo Alto Networks fell through over differences regarding Apiiro’s valuation.

Founded in 2005, Palo Alto Networks boasts that as a cybersecurity firm it is shaping the “cloud-centric future with technology that is transforming the way people and organizations operate.”

“Any organization using the public cloud has an application infrastructure with hundreds of tools and applications that can access their code and yet, they have limited visibility to their configuration or if they are secured,” says Lee Klarich, Chief Product Officer for Palo Alto Networks. “Cider has made it possible to connect into infrastructure, analyze the tools, and identify the risks, as well as how to remediate them. We are acquiring Cider for their innovation that will help enable Prisma Cloud to provide this capability that anyone doing cloud operations has to have.”

“We designed an AppSec platform that allows engineering to continue to move fast, without making compromises on security. It’s only fitting that we join Palo Alto Networks, a company built upon landmark cybersecurity ‘firsts’. There couldn’t be a better fit for Cider,” said Guy Flechter, CEO at Cider Security. “By scanning and securing the CI/CD pipeline, we can help identify where there may be vulnerabilities in your code. Prisma Cloud will now be the ultimate solution for code to cloud security.”

Israel’s Checkpoint explains that AppSec is the process of finding, fixing, and preventing security vulnerabilities at the application level, as part of the software development processes. This includes adding application measures throughout the development life cycle, from application planning to production use. And Cider Security says that its AppSec platform provides a “unified view of the entire engineering ecosystem, providing Security teams with an in-depth understanding and comprehensive view of the technologies, systems, and processes unique to every engineering environment.” Security teams, boasts the company, are provided a highly tailored set of controls and solutions to optimize security and achieve full resilience across the entire CI/CD pipeline – all the way from code to deployment.
