Defense Minister Benny Gantz today (Thursday) approved the implementation and production of tomorrow’s weapon an advanced laser system for intercepting rockets and mortar shells.
The laser system for rocket interception system, which is named Magen Or (“Light Shield”) will be developed jointly by Rafael and Elbit. It is considered a breakthrough and first of its kind weapon, not seen before. The new system will work together with the “Iron Dome” and strengthen the country’s air defense. Gantz welcomed the move and said: “A dramatic and important step towards a change in the battlefield.”
The Magen or system will be based on breakthrough technology – a powerful laser transmitter that will allow the destruction of unmanned rockets, mortars, and aircraft at ranges of up to 10 km, cheaper and more efficient than other means.
