Russian Oligarch Roman Abramovich may be serving as a mediator between the governments of Ukraine and Russia. The news comes as the status of his British Premiere League Football Club Chelsea remains in doubt after the West imposed numerous financial sanctions on Russia, Russian owned businesses and Russian oligarchs personally.
England’s The Guardian quoted his spokesman as saying, “I can confirm that Roman Abramovich was contacted by the Ukrainian side for support in achieving a peaceful resolution and that he has been trying to help ever since,” his spokesperson said. “Considering what is at stake, we would ask for your understanding as to why we have not commented on neither the situation as such nor his involvement.”
The sanctions were imposed as part of an attempt to pressure the Russian government, as well as its billionaire oligarchs, into ending their nation’s attack on Ukraine. Vladimir Putin rules Russia with the support of the oligarchs, like Roman Abramovich. So, if his country’s economy falls and they lose their fortunes all because of Putin’s miscalculation in invading Ukraine, then he may soon find himself as the former President of Russia. The sanctions have already caused the Ruble to crash and lose more than 25% of its value against the U.S. Dollar.

As for Chelsea F.C., speculation has abounded as to who will operate the team now that Abramovich himself has been hit by sanctions. Over the years there have been rumors that he only bought the team as part of a nefarious plot by Vladimir Putin to get Russian oligarchs to take financial control over important businesses in the West.
Roman Abramovich released a statement on the matter saying, “During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities. I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.”
As of this report, however, no decision has been made by the Chelsea trustees on Abramamich’s request to take over the club. They have said that they need more time to consider the matter as well as more information about whether running the club would be compatible with UK charity law.”
