Comic Amy Schumer is set to co-host the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony, the Oscars. She will do so together with fellow comic Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall.
This will be the first time since 218 that there has been a host for the Oscars ceremony. And most people watch just to see the host’s performance, sometimes even rooting for him, or her, to bomb. So Amy Schumer, and her two co-hosts, will have a great deal of expectations to meet this year. Although, after how awful the Oscars broadcasts the last few years have been, with the plummeting ratings hitting an all-time low last year, they could be lauded if they merely succeed at making a few good jokes and even a slight rise in the ratings.
Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall and Amy Schumer will not make up the first team of multiple Oscar co-hosts. In 2010, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin did a great job co-hosting. But the two are also top the list of most times hosting Saturday Night Live. But usually, multiple hosts turns into a dud of an evening like when in 1983 Liza Minnelli, Dudley Moore, Richard Pryor and Walter Matthau all hosted. And even when it is just two people it doesn’t always work like when James Franco and Anne Hathaway co-hosted in 2011.

And putting aside the multiple host issue, Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall and Amy Schumer will have some big shoes to fill when it comes to women comedians hosting the Academy Awards ceremony. Whoopi Goldberg set the bar really high for that in her four times hosting. And Ellen DeGeneres was a big hit when she hosted in 2007.

The 94th Academy Awards will air on Sunday night, March 22. The buzz ahead of the show should help with the ratings of Amy Schumer’s new TV show “Life & Beth” which premieres on Hulu a few days before the broadcast on March 18. The show which was written, produced, created and some of which directed by Schumer tells the story of Beth, who after an unexpected incident starts having flashbacks to her teen self and learns how she became who she is and who she wants to become.
