The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warn that measles has resurfaced as a global concern, in part as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses currently known, more so than COVID-19. According to the CDC, 22 million newborns worldwide missed their measles vaccinations due to the outbreak. Measles was declared eradicated in the United States in 2000, mostly due to vaccinations.

However, international travelers can bring it into the country, where it can spread to unvaccinated individuals.

Measles cases were at their highest level in nearly a quarter of a century in 2019.

Nonetheless, experts advise parents to check in with their children’s physicians and ensure they are up to date on all immunizations. Adults who were vaccinated against the virus prior to 1989 may also require a booster.
