Matt Lucas, the star of the hit British comedy show “Little Britain” now has German citizenship. He applied for citizenship as a descendant of German Jews who were forced to flee the country because of the nazi regime.
Lucas’ grandmother emigrated from Germany to England in 1938. German law allows descendants of German Jews who fled the country due to Nazism to claim citizenship.

But why did Matt Lucas need German citizenship? Perhaps he accepted it because with Brexit he the English are no longer EU citizens. A German passport gives him admission to the entire EU without the need of applying for a work visa every time her performs or films a movie in one of its countries.
Lucas received a message from a German official saying, “Dear Matt, thank you for accepting German citizenship. This means a lot to us. My colleagues who work on naturalizations here in London show great commitment. I am very grateful for this.”
Matt Lucas tweeted his feelings saying, “My grandma fled Berlin in 1938. Having been offered citizenship, I have just been to the German Embassy in London to collect my Certificate of Naturalization. I am officially Anglo-German. They gave me some Gummibärchen (German gummy Bears) and this lovely badge. Now to choose a German football team.”
The actor celebrated his new German citizenship by singing The Flintstones’ theme song in German on a show called “Bake Off.” In the show, Lucas and his Little Britain co-star Noel Fielding dressed up as the German band Karftwerk and performed in German accents.

But some viewers were not amused and tweeted their disapproval. In response, Lucas said, “I am Anglo-German. I am a citizen of both countries, with passports for each, so I’ll do a ropey German accent any time I like.”
“Mind you, I’ll probably also do a French accent and an Italian one if I fancy. Cause acting innit.”
