Unemployment Down in Israel

Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) eleased a report yesterday, Sunday, showing that unemployment dropped in Israel during the month of August 2021, as compared to August 2020. But the unemployment rate is still higher than the pre-Covid crisis levels.

Unemployed persons August 2021 216,800, for a rate of 5.2%, down from 234,700 and a rate of 5.5% in August 2020.

Employed persons temporarily absent from work all week due to reasons related to the Coronavirus pandemic + unemployed persons combined was 259,500, for a rate of 6.2%, down from 268,900, a rate of 6.3% in August 2020.

Persons not in the labor force who stopped working due to dismissal or closure of the workplace from March 2020 + employed persons temporarily absent from work all week due to reasons related to the Coronavirus pandemic + unemployed persons was 358,900, a rate of 8.4%, down from 346,700, or a rate of 8.0%, in August 2020.

The employment rate excluding persons temporarily absent from work all week due to reasons related to the Coronavirus pandemic was 60.0%, compared to 60.2% in the first half of August 2021.

Number and percentage in the labor force in the second half of August 2021, was 237,200/5.6%. This is up from the first half of July 2021 when it was 225,100/5.4%.

But the number of people out of work for reasons related to the Coronavirus has gone down steadily since the start of July 2021.

The Labor Force Survey is the main source of information regarding the labor force in Israel and is conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics on an ongoing basis. In the second half of August 2021, approximately 8,200 persons aged 15 and over have been interviewed on an ongoing basis. In August 2021, approximately 1, persons aged 15 and over have been interviewed on an ongoing basis. The survey population includes the permanent population of Israel, as well as tourists and temporary residents living in Israel continuously for more than one year. The survey follows the development of the labor force in Israel, its size and characteristics, the extent of unemployment, etc.

The CBS also acknowledge that the continued Coronavirus crisis itself did in some ways hamper its ability to collect the needed relevant data.
