Ben Gurion University Collaborates with Moroccan Counterpart on Sustainability Project

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Israel and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Morocco have initiated discussions to collaborate on scientific research projects, in addition to students and faculty exchange programs. The projects will deal with fighting climate change and sustainability.

Sustainability is defined as people meeting their own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. This applies to natural resources, as well as social and economic resources.

In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Renewable clean energy is the best known example of sustainability. This includes solar energy and wind power. Another example is sustainable food. This is the growing food without damaging or wasting natural resources. It also applies to only producing what is needed and will not be thrown out.

It also minimizes its contribution to climate change throughout the whole production process. Israel is at the forefront of this work. It has companies working to make 3D printed meat and dairy products produced from cultures in a lab. This will cut out all of the wasted energy used, and pollution caused by the world’s current poultry, dairy and beef farming throughout the world.

For example, Israeli startup Zero Egg produces an egg alternative made from plants for foodservice and food manufacturers. The company asserts that its product tastes, looks, and functions like a real egg.

Also, Israeli startup Redefine Meat is one of a number of new Israeli firms advancing the field of alternate animal based food products, to give the world viable meat alternatives. It does so by way of 3D printing technology. Redefine Meat is now introducing a new line of 3D-printed items that can now be ordered at certain select Israeli restaurants and hotels across the country.

BGU President Prof. Daniel Chamovitz: “BGU and UM6P have much in common. From their desert settings to their focus on applied research and innovative teaching methods, the two universities are well suited to collaborate on projects in sustainability and climate change. Both universities are committed to thriving in the desert in a “Green” environment, and both look outward – focused on helping our regions, countries and the world.”

Mohammed VI Polytechnic University President Hicham El Habti: “We are confident that linking science and technology institutions from both countries will have a major impact on people at a local and regional level. UM6P and BGU consider scientific research a key component for development, especially on sustainability matters. That is why we have identified this topic as the first step for our collaboration.”
