There’s no better way of measuring the explosive growth of the Internet than by taking into account that since the first domains were registered way back in 1985, more than 250 million of them now exist, with over 100 million of them having the the most widely used .suffix.
With no real letup in demand, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN the organization responsible for the distribution of domain extensions have begun to introduce a whole new set of legislation that will allow introduction of dozens of new extensions each of them geared either to a specific country, market sector, industry or language.
With the Spanish speaking population of the world numbering around 400 million or roughly 7% of the entire global population, there has long been a demand for an exclusive top-level domain (TLD) to cope with that market.
An as the gap that Israeli born US-based Internet entrepreneurs Shaul Jolles and Efi Gershom look the most likely to fill.
Jolles and Gershom, both based in Kansas City, Missouri were successful in being granted the franchise to handle sales for the .uno domain extension from ICANN, and look forward to handling sales for their new TLD amongst the growing markets in South America which as well as amongst the hundreds of thousands of Spanish speakers were made their home in in the United States.
Even though there was literally hundreds of TLD’s up for grabs, Jolles and Gershom explained that in order to be granted the distribution rights for a domain extension, they were required to go through a long term evaluation in order to meet the stringent criteria applied by ICANN. A process that demanded a lot of time and patience as well as a considerable financial investment.
According to the pair , they were required to submit exact proposals on how they intended to extract the full value of the new TLD for potential users, how it will help those who decide to register a domain with a .uno suffix. In addition they had to make significant guarantees that they would take whatever steps this is a in order meet the stringent technical demands set by ICANN in order to prevent security breeches to the global Internet infrastructure.
Shaul Jolles and Efi Gershom will be marketing their TLD through Internet hosting and web domain giant GoDaddy.com, who will be featuring the TLD prominently on its website.
The uno suffix will be marketed at a fixed price of $40 from which Jolles and Gershom will be paid significant commission.
Financing the project was handled principally by Shaul Jolles, a tech who is responsible for the running of technological incubators spread out throughout the U.S. Efi Gershom has brought considerable technical expertise to the table having been an Internet entrepreneur for more than 20 years.
According to Jolles and Gershom, there has already been considerable interest in the uno suffix, not only among the Spanish speaking community but also among the Portuguese speakers of Brazil, possibly South America’s most buoyant economies at the moment, with a population of around 200 million.
The suffix “uno” means a for the same in both languages- number one. And Jolles and Gershom intend to make it the number one TLD for a particularly strong sector of the global Internet community.
