Israeli MedTech startup Lumen has a new device that people can use to check their own metabolism. Lumen has partnered with Anytime Fitness UK to provide its gym members with the new tech.
Does dieting work? Does exercise work or does it make you so hungry all the time that you end up eating a lot more than the calories that you burn? Does counting calories work, or is it about quality and not quantity? And can the same rule be applied to everyone or does each individual have a different metabolism?
These are all the kinds of questions and problems which confront people as they diet and exercise in an attempt to lose weight. And, of course, an Israeli startup has developed the new Medtech needed to help deal with these dilemmas.

Based in Tel Aviv and founded in 2014 by CEO Daniel Tal Mor and CTO Avi Smila, Lumen has developed the world’s first hand-held, portable device to accurately measure metabolism. The company explains that this kind of tech was once only available to athletes, or in hospitals and clinics. But now it has found a way to offer metabolic testing to everyone.
Lumen is a device and app that measures your metabolism in a single breath and provides daily personalized nutrition based on your metabolic data. Through the device and app, Lumen states that users can achieve their fitness goals whether they be weight loss, performance optimization, or simply improving metabolic health.

So how does it work?
Lumen uses a CO2 sensor and flow meter to determine the CO2 concentration in a single breath. This indicates the type of fuel your body is using to produce energy. With this information a person will know what and when to eat in order to fuel a workout, improve metabolic flexibility and support fat burn. In this way Lumen says that its device is like having a personal nutritionist.
Now the more than 170,000 people who have memberships with Anytime Fitness UK will be able to use the Lumen device to supplement and enhance their workouts.
“Anytime Fitness UK is at the forefront of accessible fitness and our partnership is launched at a crucial time where we can positively impact the lives of its members in a health-focused framework. People in the UK have been given a wake-up call in regards to their health and we’re looking forward to supporting the ongoing efforts of the government in keeping UK adults healthy. Good physical health is an effective way to increase resilience and people are more aware than ever of the importance of a healthy lifestyle,” said Daniel Tal, CEO of Lumen.
