A day after the surprising visit by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif at the G7 Summit, French President Emmanuel Macron sounded very optimistic about the possibility of a summit between US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
He said on Monday at a press conference next to Trump that conditions for the summit between Trump and Rouhani had been expressed, and he hoped that such a summit would be concluded in the coming weeks.
“We created the terms for the meeting” Macron said. He added preparations for the meeting had already begun. “Talks are underway to arrange the summit. Rouhani told me he is ready to meet with Trump,” the French president said. “Hopefully, based on these talks, we will be able to hold a summit in the coming weeks.”

Trump and Rouhani are both expected to attend the UN General Assembly in New York at the end of September.
Macron noted that while there were no achievements at the summit regarding the crisis between Iran and the West, progress was made on technical issues. Macron added that he agrees with Trump that Iran should never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. “Two things are very important to us: Iran must never have nuclear weapons, and there must be no threat to regional stability,” he said.
Trump said meeting Rouhani in the coming weeks, “sounds like something could happen. Under the right circumstances, I’ll meet Rouhani.”
He added that “Iran is not the same country that was two and a half years ago when I came to power. So it was the number one terrorist state.” He said, “Iran has huge potential. We want an agreement under which Iran will have neither nuclear weapons nor ballistic missiles.”
