Kensington Palace announced Monday that Prince Harry (34) and his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, Megan Merkel (37), are expecting the first child. “Their Excellencies Duke and Duchess of Sussex are excited to announce that they are expecting a child to be born in the spring of 2019. Their Excellencies appreciate all the support they have received around the world since their wedding last May and are happy to share the happy news with the public.”
The news of pregnancy is the culmination of an extraordinary relationship that shook the rigid palace rules. In 2016 rumors began to emerge that Prince Harry was having a relationship with Merkel, an American actress who starred in the Suits series. Although she is divorced, older than the prince and her mixed origin, she was warmly welcomed into the palace and became particularly fond of Queen Elizabeth.
After months of rumor, significant Instagram images and one unusual message in which Harry attacked the media, the couple first appeared together publicly a year ago. Harry and Megan appeared together in a tennis game held as part of Invictus, a Paralympic tournament featuring soldiers and veterans in Canada, and received applause from the audience.
The exciting marriage proposal came two months later, while the couple spent time together in their house preparing roast chicken.
