An autographed photo of Albert Einstein playfully sticking his tongue out will be auctioned by Nate D. Sanders Auctions on July 27, 2017.
UPI photographer Arthur Sasse snapped the photograph of Einstein at the physicist’s 72nd birthday celebration at Princeton University on March 14, 1951. The Nobel Prize winner was good-naturedly sticking his tongue towards a group of photographers who followed him back to his car after the event. Photographers from around the country came to cover Einstein’s 72ndbirthday, but the private Albert Einstein did not relish the extra attention. UPI editors initially hesitated on printing the now iconic image of Einstein. However, Einstein was amused by the photo and requested nine prints from UPI to give to his close friends.

This is an unusual version of the print since the majority of the photos cropped Einstein’s colleagues out.
Albert Einstein requested the cropped edition from UPI to give to his friends. The image being auctioned features Dr. Frank Aydelotte, head of the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton University, along with Aydelotte’s wife.
Einstein signed the 7” x 10” photo along the left margin, “A. Einstein .51”, which indicated the image was signed shortly after it was taken.
