New Intel Quark processors targeting wearable computers

On the first day of Intel’s annual convention, the Intel Developers Forum (IDF), the company revealed a new processor family – Intel Quark, talking wearable computers and “internet of things, ” where low power requirements are more important than high performance.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich reveals the new Intel Quark chip

During the 4th quarter of 2013 Intel will present reference designs for the new processors, in order to allow its partners to begin developing solutions based on the new chips. The price of the Quark processors is still unknown, but the company made it clear that when compared with the cheapest, 42$ Intel Atom chips, they are one-fifth the size and require 90% less power.

New Intel CEO Brian Krzanich told the hundreds of developers, media reporters, bloggers and analysts in the audience that wearable computers and advanced robots are only a part of the first applications based on the next wave of computing.” According to Krzanich “Smartphones and tablets aren’t the final destinations for computers. We still don’t know how to define the next wave of computing, but as this new era of personal computing grows more and more personal,  wearable computers will become the new source of innovation.” Krzanich showed off a smart bracelet and a smart name badge as examples of concepts under development, and said Intel is looking for opportunities to cooperate in this area.
