Starbucks Responds to Trump Immigration Ban: Will Hire 10,000 Refugees

Starbucks VS Donald Trump

Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks, has released an open letter in which he declared his company’s intention to hire 10,000 refugees as new employees. The move is yet another example of corporate America taking a stand against President Donald Trump’s imposition of a new immigration ban on people from Muslim nations.

President Trump on Friday issued an executive order prohibiting people from seven different Muslim nations located in the Middle East from entering the United States for the next 90 days. The immigration ban affects citizens of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen and Libya.

Business executives from companies like Airbnb, Google and Facebook have come out strongly in condemnation of President Trump’s new immigration policy.

The Starbucks CEO wrote in his letter, “I write to you today with deep concern, a heavy heart and a resolute promise. Let me begin with the news that is immediately in front of us: we have all been witness to the confusion, surprise and opposition to the Executive Order that President Trump issued on Friday, effectively banning people from several predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States, including refugees fleeing wars.”

“We are living in an unprecedented time, one in which we are witness to the conscience of our country, and the promise of the American Dream, being called into question,” continued the head of Starbucks. “These uncertain times call for different measures and communication tools than we have used in the past. I am hearing the alarm you all are sounding that the civility and human rights we have all taken for granted for so long are under attack.”

Donald Trump’s executive order included an indefinite ban on the admission of Syrians refugees to the United States. These are people fleeing a country that is being torn apart by a brutal civil war and the terrorist organization ISIS.

In addition to his promise to hire refugees, Howard Schultz also put Starbucks in a position squarely at odds with other signature policies of President Donald Trump. The President promised to deport millions of people who live in America. but who do not have legal documentation. Now Starbucks will support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program which aims to assist people who have lived their whole lives in America but who are undocumented attain U.S. Citizenship. These people are also known as “Dreamers.”

President Trump has promised to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Well Howard Schultz said that Starbucks will continue to offer its employees affordable healthcare no matter what the Trump Administration may do to the Affordable Care Act.

Howard Schultz also had a few words about that wall which Donald Trump says that he will build along the border with Mexico. He cited the fact that Starbucks has 600 stores in 60 cities across Mexico which employ over 7,000 Mexicans. Schultz promised that Starbucks would continue to invest in that country.

Airbnb, Netflix, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Uber, Tesla and now Starbucks. How many more major American corporations can Donald Trump afford to lose before he will rethink his Muslim immigration ban.
