Hillary Clinton, former US senator and secretary of state, who had hoped to become the first female president of the U.S. called Trump to concede defeat. Trump won 288 of the electoral votes—18 more than the necessary 270. “I’ve just received a call from Secretary Clinton, ” the president-elect told his supporters. “She congratulated us — it’s about us — on our victory and I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard fought campaign. She fought very hard.”
President-elect Donald Trump, who will follow President Barack Obama in the White House, was accompanied by his family and vice presidential candidate Mike Pence when he took the stage at his celebratory party in the early hours of November 9.
“It is time for us to come together as one united people, ” he said. “I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important to me. Trump rode a wave of anger toward Washington insiders. He won avid support among a core base of white non-college educated workers with his promise to be the “greatest jobs president that God ever created.” He has vowed to impose a 35 percent tariff on goods exported to the United States by US companies that went abroad.
