Paramount Pictures Fined In China Over Transformers Movie

paramount_logo

Paramount Pictures has been fined close to $300, 000 by a court in China over a dispute centered on the movie “Transformers: Age of Extinction.” Paramount is a part of Sumner Redstone’s Viacom entertainment empire.

The fine must be paid in compensation to a Chinese resort to settle a dispute over product placement, China’s South China Morning Post has reported. The Wulong Karst National Geological Park filed suit against Paramount back in 2014, alleging that the studio had breached an agreement to feature the park’s logo in that movie.

The park claimed that it had agreed to pay Paramount 6 million Yuan ($900, 000) and let the studio film parts of the movie on its property and in exchange it would get to have its logo featured prominently in the movie. Wulong Karst had sough as much as 20 million Yuan ($900, 000) in compensation.

A court in Chongqing in the southwest of China agreed, but only fined Paramount the lesser sum to cover damages and legal fees.

The award and whatever legal fees Paramount may have incurred fighting the suit are mere chump change to the Hollywood behemoth. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.
