Indian Real estate mogul Baleinder Sahani has just paid $9 million for an official Dubai licence plate for one of his Rolls Royces.  Sahani is well known in Dubai, both for his passion for expensive Rolls Royces and expensive vanity plates.

His newest ultra-expensive licence plate, which reads just as: “D5”, is actually something of a model of minimalism and discretion in this area of ego-enhancing trinkets for the super-rich, was sold to him at a government auction on Saturday.  At the same auction Sahani successfully bid for another plate for “only” $270, 000, according to local media.   He also bought the number “O9” last year at an auction, for 25 million dirhams in UAE currency, or close to $7 million, Sahani told Gulf News.

Government auctions of licence plate numbers are a big attraction in the United Arab Emirates, and a useful source of substantial government revenue as well. This is true in many other countries too, wherever the rich and famous seek to dress up their expensive cars.

Eighty number plates went under the hammer at Saturday’s auction in Dubai. Bids for the “D5“ plate started at $5.5  million, and finally sold at $9 million to Balwinder Sahani.

Bloomberg reports that in 2008, businessman Saeed Al Khouri, paid around $14 million for the licence plate bearing just the number “1” in Abu Dhabi, a record for the country.

The proceeds of the weekend’s sale will go to Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority.
