Valery Spiridonov from Russia has announced his intention to be the first person to undergo a head transplant, so that his brain can be attached to a healthy body. Italian neurosurgeon Professor Sergio Canavero will carry out the operation

Spiridonov suffers from Werdnig Hoffman disease, a rare neuromuscular disorder characterised by loss of motor neurons and progressive muscle wasting, often leading to early death. The disease seriously diminishes his physical capabilities and left him dependent on a wheelchair.
