US President Barack Obama admitted on Wednesday that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would not be solved during his remaining time in the White House.
“This conflict has been going on for 60 years, ” Obama told students in Argentina. “It’s certainly not going to be solved in the nine months that I have left on the job.”

The American president was asked by the students if a binational state was a solution to the conflict. “That isn’t a solution that will bring stability because of the great distrust between the Jewish people and the Palestinians, ” he answered. “The only way to solve the crisis is with two states for two peoples.”
Obama added, “Israelis and Palestinians both have legitimate fears, but when it comes to making peace, we can’t do it for them.”
The president’s answer stands in opposition to a report from the beginning of the month in the Wall Street Journal, according to which the White House intended to attempt resuming the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations before the end of Obama’s term.
The report, which is based on senior American sources, states that the attempt is likely to include the support of the UN Security Council to present the steps for an agreement between the two parties.
