Two years later Queen and the “American Idol” runner-up teamed up once again at the MTV European Music Awards. Only in 2012, the band and the energetic young singer hit the road together. They played more than 70 gigs with dates in Europe, the U.S., Australia and South America.
Pollstar cited The Telegraph’s Catherine Gee, who writes that it’s Lambert’s “youth and rapturous energy that has given Queen the glittering boost that they’ve been so desperately lacking since Mercury’s death.” Her review adds, “No one will ever be able to replace Freddie Mercury, this much we know. Classic Rock quote from the interview to Absolute Radio where Lambert said: “I did some studying. I felt I really needed to. I was pretty familiar with them, but when I first started working with them, that’s when I went onto the internet and scoured everything.”
He adds a Mercury performance in Montreal stood out. “He’s running around in shorts, with no shoes on. Watching him in that zone really made me understand him.
“He just didn’t give a sh*t. He was like, ‘I’m going to do whatever I want.’ I think he kind of defined what a rock star was to me. He doesn’t actually care – and he’s so fabulous doing it.”
