Verint’s leadership team met Kapil Sibal, India’s telecom and IT minister

/ By Gali Raz /
Visiting Israel toward the end of last month was Kapil Sibal, India’s telecom and IT minister. The purpose of Sibal’s visit was to meet up with the Israel Minister of Communications, Gilad Erdan, to get a feel of the developments being made in the country in existing 4G telecommunications technologies as well as discussing the initial stages of possible Joint Corporation between the two countries in developing 5G telecom technologies.
It is understood that discussions were very positive and there is hope for the future is that Israel and India can work together in research and development based around standardized formulation, reciprocal development and eventual manufacturing of 5G telecom systems.
According to Mr. Sibal, Israel has existing technology coupled with outstanding innovation abilities while India has the capital to invest as well as a vast and virtually untapped market.
According to reports, there were two areas which were the principal focus of discussion during the meetings held between Erdan and Sibal. As well as development cooperation relating to broadband technology also on the table was the discussion was the possible reduction of roaming charges between India and Israel.
India is apparently aware of the fact that they run the risk of lagging behind the rest of the world as far as broadband technology is concerned, providing the country with only 2G, 3G with limited penetration to date of 4G services.
For the time being 5G technology appears to be a long way off before becoming commercial, although there are a number of companies involved in the telecommunications industry who have already made some preliminary tests on 5G technology, with expectations that the service could be ready for launching by around the year 2020.
Telecommunications industry onlookers believe that when 5G technology does arrive it will change the face of mobile technology to levels previously unimagined. For example 5G capabilities are expected to provide upload and download speeds of 10 gigabit per second internet speed, equivalent to 100 times faster than current speeds available using 4G.
In addition, 5G technology will be far more based around mobile devices, making it possible to access high speed internet on Smartphones, tablets and laptops and not just on the traditional desktop computers.
With Israel becoming increasingly recognized as one of the global centers for the development of computer technology and telecommunications, it’s little wonder that India is looking towards a long-term relationship.
Gilad Erdan was born and raised in the coastal town of Ashkelon. After completing his Army service during which he went on to achieve the rank of captain, Erdan graduated with a law degree from Tel Aviv’s Bar-Ilan University.
After graduating, Erdan spent some time in private practice, before becoming involved in politics, spending a few years working close to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu., holding down a number of key positions in his bureau
Erdan has been a Member of the Israeli Knesset was since 2003, retaining his seat in 2006, 2009 as well as the most recent elections held in January 2013. Minister of Communications is the most important cabinet post that Erdan has held to date.
