President John Dramani Mahama and the President of the World Bank Group, Dr. Jim Yong Kim have jointly launched a report dubbed “Poverty in a Rising Africa” at Mantse Agbonaa in Accra. It also coincided with the World commemoration of Poverty Eradication Day.
President Mahama said despite successes chalked up with the Millennium Development Goals, the time has come for Africa to take advantage of the UN Sustainable Development Goals to launch a major assault on poverty.
President Mahama said eradicating poverty by 2030 may be over ambitious. He was optimistic that it can be achieved.
President Mahama said apart from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions being poverty endemic, latest studies show that extreme poverty exists in all the coastal communities in Ghana.
Government, he said will soon extend the LEAP programs to people in the coastal communities.
The World Bank President Dr. Kim stressed the need for the global community to take keen interest in programs that will help to end poverty by 2030.
The “Poverty in a Rising Africa” report estimates that 388 million people or 43 percent of all people living in sub-Saharan Africa experienced extreme poverty in 2012.
It, however, called for much better measurement of poverty, because data gaps make it extremely difficult for policy-makers to target programs for the poor.
The Prime Minister of Dr. Congo Augustine Matata Mapon was among the dignitaries who graced the occasion.
President Mahama presented smocks to Dr. Kim, Prime Minister Mapon, and the President of the Africa Development Bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina.
