The White House announced Raffi Freedman-Gurspan’s appointment on Tuesday. This represents another great leap forward by the Obama administration regarding LGBT rights.
Freedman-Gurspan was born in Honduras and adopted by Marion Freedman-Gurspan, a single Jewish mother in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Raffi Freedman-Gurspan has become the first transgender person to work at the White House. She will work in the Office of Personnel having previously been employed by the National Center for Transgender Equality. There, she previously was a policy adviser for the National Center for Transgender Equality’s racial and economic justice initiative.

Her mother, Marion Freedman-Gurspan said in the book Transitions of the Heart, that her daughter , Raffi (which in Hebrew is a name for boys only) began identifying herself as gay at the age of 12, adding that it was only after her boy moved to Norway in junior year of college that she had started dressing like a woman. “I sent a son abroad for his junior year of college…by the time visited Norway in May, was visiting a daughter.”
