Wing Cloud, the Israeli startup behind the open-source Wing Programming Language (Winglang), has officially ceased operations, less than two years after emerging from stealth mode.
The company, which aimed to revolutionize cloud-native application development through its unique infrastructure-as-code language, did not disclose a specific reason for its shutdown.
Founded with the goal of simplifying and accelerating cloud app deployment by bridging the gap between development and operations, Wing Cloud gained attention in the developer community for its innovative approach. However, despite early momentum, the startup has now joined a growing list of companies that have struggled to sustain growth in an increasingly competitive cloud development space.

The closure of Wing Cloud highlights the challenges faced by open-source startups in maintaining long-term scalability, funding, and widespread adoption in the fast-evolving cloud computing ecosystem.
Winglang is an open source programming language designed for building distributed systems that leverage cloud infrastructure as first-class citizens. The Winglang compiler produces a ready-to-deploy package that includes both infrastructure-as-code definitions for Terraform, CloudFormation, or other cloud provisioning engines; as well as Node.js code designed to run on computer platforms such as AWS Lambda, Kubernetes, or edge platforms.
An open-source programming language is a programming language whose source code is freely available for anyone to use, modify, and redistribute. This means that anyone can contribute to the development of the language, and that the language can be used for any purpose, commercial or not. Some examples include JavaScript and C++.
Open-source programming languages are popular because they offer transparency -the source code for open-source languages is available for anyone to inspect, which can help to ensure that the language is secure and well-designed. But most importantly, they are typically free to use and distribute, which can save businesses money.
“After an amazing ride, we’ve made the tough decision to shut down our company, Wing (previously Monada),” wrote Wing Cloud co-founder and CEO Elad Ben-Israel. “It’s bittersweet, but we’re deeply proud of what we built—and even more grateful for the amazing people who joined us along the way.”
“While developer experience is something engineers care deeply about, it’s not always seen as business-critical by most companies,” Ben-Israel added. “That made it hard to build a sustainable business around it. But when we tried to turn that energy into a business, we hit some tough reality checks. While developer experience is something engineers care deeply about, it’s not always seen as business-critical by most companies. That made it hard to build a sustainable business around it.”
Wing Cloud was founded in 2022 by CEO Elad Ben-Israel, creator of myriad open-source projects in the cloud infrastructure space such as the AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK), CDK for Kubernetes (CDK8s), JSII, and Projen; as well as COO Shai Ber. The company says that it aims to tame cloud complexity with software solutions that empower developers and DevOps teams to harness the power of the cloud together.
