The CPI is a measure of inflation. The U.S. Bureau of Statistics defines CPI as a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. Indexes are available for the U.S. and various geographic areas. Average price data for select utility, automotive fuel, and food items are also available.
The CPI is calculated based on the prices of a representative basket of goods and services commonly purchased by consumers. Different items in the basket are weighted according to their importance in a typical consumer’s budget.
