A CNN investigation claims that Hamas is not close to defeat in Gaza. The report, published Monday, says the terror group is actively rebuilding its military capabilities, despite intense pressure from Israeli forces.
So rather than backing up Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claims that Hamas is nearly finished, CNN’s findings show that while Hamas is hurting, they’re not out of the fight. In fact, around half of Hamas’s units in northern Gaza have managed to recover and get back in the game. It’s not just their old fighters either; a former Israeli military officer told CNN that Hamas has been busy bringing in recruits, adding thousands of fresh faces to their ranks.
The CNN team, with some help from American think tanks, dug into the situation by going through lots of statements from both sides, tracking down where documents from Gaza are coming from, and talking to soldiers and locals to get the full picture.

What they found is pretty surprising. Out of the 24 original Hamas battalions, only three are completely out of action. Eight are still fighting hard, and 13 are limping along, able to carry out occasional guerrilla attacks.
It’s also worth noting that the battalions in central Gaza, like those in Deir al-Balah and Nusseirat, seem to be in better shape than others. Israeli officials claimed that the IDF did not “handle properly” the battalions of the terrorist organization in the center of the Gaza Strip – because of the assessment that many abductees are being held by them.
This report could change how we see the situation in Gaza. It looks like Hamas is showing more resilience than some might have expected, even with all the pressure they’re under.
