World’s Most Powerful Passport Revealed: Unexpected Country Takes Top Spot

Believe it or not, America is not the most powerful country in the world when it comes to the strength of its passport for world travel. Apparently, American citizens hold passports that are just the 28th most powerful in the world, as far as how many other nations allow US passport holders to enter their countries. This is according to the Henley and Partners Henley Passport Index.

If you have an American passport you can only visit 186 countries.

So, what country has the most powerful passport?

You are probably thinking that it is Switzerland, and you are wrong. There are 13 other nations ahead of Switzerland on the list. The country’s passport on;y opens doors to 190 countries, tied with the UK, New Zealand and three others.

Well, how about Sweden then? Nope! Six countries beat Sweden whose passport gets you into 191 countries around the world, tying it with Austria, Ireland and four other countries.

So, who is number one on the list? Well, it’s Singapore whose passport can get you into 195 different countries. The Republic of Singapore, a mere city-state, leads the world in diplomatic ties with other nations.

Angola, Bhutan and Egypt were at the bottom of the list with each nation’s passport only allowing travel to 52 different nations.

Henley and Partners boasts that the Henley Passport Index is “the original and most authoritative ranking of all the world’s passports” according to the number of
destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The index
includes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations, giving users the
most extensive and reliable information about their global access
and mobility.

With historical data spanning 19 years and regularly updated expert analysis on the latest shifts in passport power, the index is an invaluable resource for global citizens and the standard reference tool for government policy in this field.
