Stanford University’s comprehensive AI Index Report analyzes global artificial intelligence trends, compiling and visualizing key data on AI development, adoption, and impact across industries.

Stanford University’s Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence’s AI Index Report 2023, its sixth annual such report, found that Israel is one of the countries in the lead in the development of new artificial intelligence technologies.

Stanford’s AI Index report tracks, collates, distills, and visualizes data related to artificial intelligence (AI).

According to the report, the United States leads China, the EU, and the U.K. as the leading source of top AI models. In 2023, 61 notable AI models originated from U.S.-based institutions, far outpacing the European Union’s 21 and China’s 15.

The Stanford report found that America and China are strengthening their relationship when it comes to the development of new AI. Stanford said the number of AI research collaborations between the United States and China increased roughly 4 times since 2010, and was 2.5 times greater than the collaboration totals of the next nearest country pair, the United Kingdom and China. However, the total number of U.S.-China collaborations only increased by 2.1% from 2020 to 2021, the smallest year-over year growth rate since 2010.

The US also leads the world in investment in AI with $67.22 billion invested in 2023. This was roughly nine times the $7.76 billion invested by the number two country China. Israel came out in eighth place overall with $1.52 billion invested.

Israel also came in fourth place for newly found AI companies with 442. The US again took the lead in this category, having founded 5,509 companies, almost four times the number as the number two country on the list, China, where 1,446 new AI companies were established.

Israel, however, did not make the list of countries with the most AI patents granted per 100,000 residents. It also did not have any “notable machine learning models” listed.

The rapid advancement of AI technology has become a focal point for policymakers worldwide. In 2023, several countries and international organizations, including the United States and European Union, implemented significant AI policies. This surge in regulatory action demonstrates growing recognition of AI’s potential impact and the need for governance.

The Stanford report also found that AI beats humans on some tasks, but not on all. So don’t panic just yet, your job is still safe.

“AI has surpassed human performance on several benchmarks, including some in image classification, visual reasoning, and English understanding,” it said. “Yet it trails behind on more complex tasks like competition-level mathematics, visual commonsense reasoning and planning.”
