You will never guess what the latest popular trend during sex is for the members of Generation Z – also called Gen Z – and it’s dangerous. More and more young people these days are engaging in strangulation during sex, according to a survey conducted by the University of Melbourne Law School and the University of Queensland in Australia.

Some people believe that strangulation can enhance their sexual experience, but it comes with obvious risks.

The researchers surveyed 4,702 Gen Z people aged between 18 and 35, the findings of which were released today, revealed that 57% of participants had been strangled during sex at least once. More than half (51%) reported having done it to a partner.

According to the research, Gen Z women were more likely than men to initiate consent for strangulation with 27% of women saying they asked to be strangled compared to just 23% of men. Also, 21% of women reported giving prior consent during a previous encounter compared to just 15% of men.

The research also found that 32% of men, 20% of women, and 23% of trans and gender-diverse participants agreed to strangulation when their partner initiated it. However, trans and gender-diverse participants were more likely to withdraw consent with 12% saying they withdrew their consent compared to 7% of men and 6% of women.

And this is not all. The researchers also found that, among Gen Z, women were more likely to experience non-consensual strangulation with 10% of women saying they did not consent to the act but did not stop their partner, compared to 8% of men and 4% of trans and gender-diverse participants.

“Placing pressure on the neck is not safe. Only a small amount of pressure can cause serious harm, and potentially death,” Professor Heather Douglas, from the University of Melbourne, who led the research told news.com.au.

“Particularly concerning is that this behavior can lead to brain injury and the more often people engage in strangulation the more likely brain injury is,” she added. “Often people will be unaware of this.”

Generation Z, often abbreviated as Gen Z, refers to the demographic cohort following Millennials and preceding Generation Alpha. There’s no universally agreed-upon birth year range, but most sources place it somewhere between the mid-to-late 1990s and the early 2010s. This means the oldest members of Gen Z are entering their late 20s, while the youngest are still teenagers.

Unlike Millennials who grew up with the rise of the internet, Gen Z has never known a world without it. They are comfortable with technology and adept at using social media, online communication platforms, and mobile devices.

Gen Z has come of age during a period marked by significant global events like the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Great Recession, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. These events have fostered a sense of social awareness, global citizenship, and a questioning of traditional authority figures.
