Amal Clooney, the wife of Oscar winning actor and producer George Clooney, said on Monday that she was personally involved in the International Criminal Court (ICC) decision to accuse Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of war crimes in Gaza. The Clooney Foundation for Justice revealed this on its website.

The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) prosecutor, Karim Kahn officially requested the court issue such arrest warrants, on Monday.

“More than four months ago, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court asked me to assist him with evaluating evidence of suspected war crimes and crimes against humanity in Israel and Gaza,” said Amal Clooney. “I agreed and joined a panel of international legal experts to undertake this task. Together we have engaged in an extensive process of evidence review and legal analysis including at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.”

“I served on this Panel because I believe in the rule of law and the need to protect civilian lives,” she added. “The law that protects civilians in war was developed more than 100 years ago and it applies in every country in the world regardless of the reasons for a conflict. As a human rights lawyer, I will never accept that one child’s life has less value than another’s. I do not accept that any conflict should be beyond the reach of the law, nor that any perpetrator should be above the law. “

Clooney went on to say that she supports what she called a “historic step” that the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has taken to “bring justice to victims of atrocities in Israel and Palestine.”

Amal Clooney is co-founder, along with her husband George, of the Clooney Foundation for Justice. She is also a barrister specializing in international law and human rights who represents victims of human rights violations in national and international courts. She represents clients before the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, and the European Court of Human Rights. Alongside court work, she provides advice to governments and individuals on legal issues in her areas of expertise.

Born in Lebanon to Muslim parents, Amal Clooney is an Adjunct Professor at Columbia Law School and co-authored the leading textbook on due process internationally, The Right to a Fair Trial in International Law, published by Oxford University Press. She practiced as a litigation attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in New York and holds law degrees from Oxford University and New York University School of Law.
