Eat Lots of Mozzarella Cheese! Here’s Why

Mozzarella is a semi-soft, non-aged cheese traditionally made in southern Italy from the milk of Italian Mediterranean water buffalo. It is prepared by the pasta filata method, which involves stretching and kneading the curd. This process gives mozzarella its characteristic elastic texture. Mozzarella is a versatile cheese that can be enjoyed fresh, cooked, or melted. It is a key ingredient in many Italian dishes, including pizza, pasta, and salads.

Mozzarella is a good source of calcium, which is essential for strong bones and teeth. It also contains protein, which is important for muscle growth and repair. Also, cmpared to many other cheeses, mozzarella is generally lower in fat and sodium. Part-skim mozzarella provides even less fat.

Some mozzarella varieties contain probiotics, like Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus fermentum, which may benefit gut health and digestion.

“Some foods, such as those high in saturated fat and sodium, can increase someone’s risk of cardiovascular disease,” Dr. Cheng-Han Chen, MD, a board-certified interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center told Parade Magazine.

“It’s a good source of protein and calcium, and even contains probiotics that can benefit gut and immune health,” added Dr. Chen. “Fresh mozzarella is also lower in saturated fat and sodium than other cheeses.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, dairy products form a big part of the diet of many Americans. From skim milk and yogurt to cheese and ice cream, the average American consumed over 660 pounds of dairy products in 2021. This is an increase from 539 pounds per capita in 1975, when the United States Department of Agriculture began tracking this information. Dairy is a source of nutrients such as calcium and protein, and may be fortified with vitamin D. Learn how dairy can play a role in a healthy diet.
