The Israeli Military is Pumping Sea Water into Hamas’ Gaza Terror Tunnels

IDF pumping water into Hamas Gaza terror tunnels (from IDF video)

The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) has been flooding the terror tunnel built by Hamas in the Gaza Strip with seawater. It only just confirmed this fact, perhaps in response to recent claims that Israel has failed to put a dent in Hamas’ tunnel network. The pumping of the seawater is called “Operation Atlantis,” but perhaps “Operation Med” would have been a better name for it.

“The IDF has implemented new capabilities during the war, with the aim of neutralizing underground terrorist infrastructure, including by channelling large volumes of water into the,” said the Israeli military. “The IDF takes into consideration the soil and water systems in the area, matching the method of operation to each specific case.”

The IDF went on to describe this as a “significant tool in combating the threat of Hamas’ underground terrorist infrastructure.”

Many of the tunnels that were uncovered and destroyed with explosives, including ones fully equipped as bunkers with electricity and various facilities. The IDF released footage showing their interiors as well as their demolitions on a regular basis.

However, it was reported in recent days that Israeli forces at best destroyed only about 20% of what could be hundreds of miles of tunnels in Gaza.

But that figure only took into account the tunnels blown up by the IDF and not the ones rendered unusable.

The use of seawater to render the tunnels unusable is so simple it is brilliant. After all, the Mediterranean Sea is right there and the pipes used to pump the water can be used over and over again.

The biggest problem now for Israeli forces in dealing with the remaining tunnels in southern Gaza is that Hamas is holding 136 Israelis hostage inside them. So, the IDF cannot freely act against these tunnels without risking the lives of the Israeli hostages.

When it comes to pumping the tunnels with seawater, however, this is not an issue. And the tunnels don’t even need to be completely filled with water. A level of less than a foot would make it difficult for them to function inside the tunnels and if the water makes it to waist level it could damage munitions stored in the tunnels and hamper the use of electrical equipment.

So, no one needs to worry about hostages drowning.
