In Spite of War UAE Continues Tech Ties with Israel

Yoelle Maarek

Despite the ongoing war in Gaza, business and technological ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates continue to grow. Technology Innovation Institute (TII), an Abu Dhabi-based organization, is setting up a new AI/IR Research Center in Haifa. Yoelle Maarek, the chief researcher at AIIR, Technology Innovation Institute, will lead it.

Maarek is a former executive at both Amazon and Google.

It is a really big deal that this is moving forward considering all of the talk that the war in Gaza is putting a strain on Israel’s relations with the Arab world, specifically with the countries who are part of the Abraham Accords. The UAE, together with Bahrain, was one of the first two Arab nations to take part in the Accords when they were first signed in 2020.

The situation in Gaza will probably not have any detrimental effects on the Abraham Accords in the long term because the Arab Gulf states know that Hamas – which enacted a barbaric massacre on innocent Israelis on October 7 – is backed by Iran. Iran is a threat to their security and serves as the common enemy that helped bring them to establishing diplomatic ties with Israel.

“I am opening in Haifa, Israel, an AI/IR Research Center for the Technology Innovation Institute (TII). TII is the UAE-based institute that invented Falcon, one of the leading open-source Large Language Models,” Yoelle Maarek wrote on LinkedIn. “We will work on some of the most interesting challenges in AI and at the same time contribute to the vision of scientific collaboration articulated in the Abraham Accords.”

“Thrilled to start 2024 with an incredibly exciting new adventure!” Yoelle Maarek said in a post on Likedin. “I am opening in Haifa, Israel, an AI/IR Research Center for the Technology Innovation Institute (TII). TII is the UAE-based institute that invented Falcon, one of the leading open-source Large Language Models”

Maarek said that the plan is to work on some of the “most interesting challenges in AI and at the same time contribute to the vision of scientific collaboration articulated in the Abraham Accords. I could not wish for a more exciting and meaningful adventure.”

And she said they are looking for “talented and fun researchers and applied scientists in generative AI and Information Retrieval.”

The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) is a global research center dedicated to “pushing the frontiers of knowledge.” It boasts that its teams of scientists, researchers and engineers work in an “open, flexible and agile environment to deliver discovery science and transformative technologies.”
