Dr. Brett Osborn Offers 5 Ways to Better Health

Do you want to live a longer and healthier life? Well, Dr. Brett Osborn has plenty to say about what you need to do. You can learn more from any one of his many YouTube videos. He recently told Fox News about the ways to do so saying, “You are never too young or too old for good health.”

The first and most important advice that Dr. Brett Osborn gave was that each and every person needs to take responsibility for his or her own health. Now, this may sound obvious, but people don’t necessarily acknowledge this simple fact. But what the doctor means here is that you need to be more proactive about things and not just wait for your doctor to tell you what to do at a checkup.

“Don’t think that your doctor is going to find all your risk factors and save you from a heart attack or stroke — more often than not, that doesn’t happen,” Dr. Brett Osborn told Fox. He explained that these things are known as “silent killers” for a reason in that they do not have symptoms to look out for before they strike.

So, what should you do? Well the doctor gave a list of six blood tests that everyone should be sure to get. These include a Lipid Profile to check your cholesterol, Vertical Auto Profile (VAP that measures all the components of a standard lipid profile and also delves further, segmenting cholesterol into sub-types, and a C-Reactive Protein (CRP) test for people overweight because they have a propensity for this protein that can cause heart attacks.

The doctor also says to get a Homocysteine test to check for the likelihood of a stroke and other diseases associated with this, a Hemoglobin A1C test to check your blood sugar levels and a Vitamin D3 test to check for signs of diabetes.

“It is nearly impossible to achieve optimal health without taking intermittent snapshots of the inner workings of your body to guide you, which can be provided by laboratory testing that will accurately identify any and all risk factors,” said Dr. Brett Osborn.

He also spoke about the importance of taking certain types of supplements and exercising your brain, not just your body. “Physical exercise and critical thinking both forge neural pathways in the brain,” he said adding that “There is a component of learning while exercising or working through mental challenges like puzzles, and this process of learning literally rewires the brain.”

Finally he said to be sure and check the glycemic index of the food that you eat. This lets you know about the level of carbohydrates – basically sugars – in the food that you eat. So, obviously this is low in vegetables and high in breads. But it is not always that simple.

Dr. Brett Osborn is the Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Mary’s Medical Center, a level I trauma center in West Palm Beach, FL. As a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS), he has also been secondarily boarded by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and obtained the CSCS honorarium from the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
